Yesterday we said farewell to Berry, our faithful

Yesterday we said farewell to Berry, our faithful travel companion. When we found him at Kia Waterloo, we were quickly convinced he was right for us and converted him to our perfect overlanding vehicle.

A kitchen in the back, an additional battery and eventually a solar panel meant that we were completely self sufficient. With a comfy tent on top and fallback inside sleeping we handled all kinds of weather. We wanted the great outdoors and that is what Berry gave us. And we've lost count of how many times people came up to us and said he looked so cool! 😎

Nights may have been cold, but there was no better feeling than warming up in the morning in the rising sun with a bowl of hot oat meal & coffee. With Berry we were outside all the time. In fact, we almost felt like we were part of nature, as we would always hear all the birds and coyotes around us so well.

Of course it wasn't always only fun, but spending an evening watching Netflix in the front seats while we waited out a snow storm in the Alabama Hills or having just white bread and cake for dinner in the Mojave Desert because the wind was too strong to be able to cook were interesting experiences. 😅

We wanted to take him to Ushuaia, but the universe had other things in store for us, and after a one and a half year storage period in the south of Mexico, we're now right back where we started. Maybe Berry will try again someday? 🌎

At least he's sure to continue his adventures, as his new owners Katrin & Mathias will be taking him on another road trip across Canada & the US. And who knows what will happen next? We'll be sure to follow their adventure to see where he ends up this time!

Goodbye Berry. It's been great. We love you! ♥

We've made it full circle and are back where we be

We've made it full circle and are back where we began, in Kitchener, at Merijn's family's place. This is where we bought Berry and built our setup. So nice to see everyone again and see what's changed since we left here almost 3 years ago.

While waiting for some necessary parts to arrive for Berry, we explored the nearby Grand River Conservation Areas and repeated our first day trip from here, to Niagara Falls. It may have been warmer last time but that didn't keep us from standing out front on the boat in the spray of course! 🌊💦😄

We've reached Canada! 🇨🇦🤗 And our first stop is Montreal. Merijn's cousin showed us around Mont Royal Park and Berry's future owners (after admiring Berry) joined us in trying the famous 'poutine', exploring the city center, and visiting the super exciting 'haute couture' barbie exposition. A nice couple of social days! 🙂

Our last stop in the USA are the White Mountains, with one of the few campgrounds this far north that offers 'winter' camping. It's always nice to see so many outdoor-minded people that still go out tent camping even though temperatures go down to freezing at night. 🏕❄

Well it might have been cold at night, but the weather was so good during the day that it felt like spring had finally begun. Trees were green, trail conditions were good and views were stunning. An awesome final showcase of the kind of natural beauty the USA has to offer.

We were in doubt for a long time about whether to visit Acadia National Park. It was one of the main targets for our return trip to Canada, but we hadn't realized all the campgrounds would still be closed and the weather would be so cold & wet. But we ended up splurging for a hotel (and some very big hamburgers) and were happy we did. The afternoons were mostly dry with even some sun and we were able to enjoy the specular coastline and hike some awesome trails in the park. It was a bit expensive and out of the way, but we're happy we went for it! 😊

So since the beginning of our trip, we've spotted black bears, grizzlies, polar bears, moose, elk, whales, dolphins, and much more. But there was one animal which always eluded us: the beaver.

Mostly because we were too lazy to get up early enough in the morning. Until now. In Pawtuckaway State Park we finally went on a beaver 'hunt' around sunrise and got lucky! A whole bunch of them came out and swam around right in front of us, almost posing for the camera. Finally, now that our journey is coming to an end, we're able to add this one major omission to our wildlife list. 🦫✅

We're back at the sea, in Assateague Island Nation

We're back at the sea, in Assateague Island National Seashore. With a few short but sweet nature trails and a huge beautiful white beach, it's a nice place to relax for a day. And just for variation, instead of having to keep your food hidden away from bears and raccoons, here it's the free roaming wild horses you have to worry about. I'm not sure which I prefer, because the horses are definitely not scared of humans! 🐴

We spent 3 days touring around Washington DC, visiting monuments & museums, and by the end we felt like we definitely could have filled 3 days more! There are so many interesting museums here it's almost impossible to visit them all, and best of all: almost all of them are free! Add to that a $20 campground just 45 minutes from the city center and you have a perfect budget traveler destination. Although in that case you might want to skip the $6 ice cream in front of the white house... 🍦💸

Coming from the warm south coast, it was hard to b

Coming from the warm south coast, it was hard to believe that the day before we arrived in the Great Smoky Mountains there had just been a snow storm! But several park roads were still closed and the trail we hiked the next day still had significant stretches of snow. Nothing too serious, fortunately, and we made it to Charlie's Bunion just fine.

From the Smokies we followed the Appalachians northeast on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a couple of days. Turns out we're just a couple weeks too early in the season, as the trees are still leafless and most of the campgrounds still closed. Finding sleeping spots required us to go a little out of the way into the surrounding national forest and the surprisingly beautyful Stone Mountain State Park. The parkway was amazing though, especially the section in North Carolina. Fantastic drive!

Our Appalachian road trip ended in Shenandoah National Park, where we spent a couple of days hiking and enjoying the liveliness of a national park campground in full swing. This side of the US may not have the overwhelmingly spectacular landscapes of the west, it sure is beautiful, and I can only imagine how much so with spring wildflowers of fall colors.

Traveling from the coast to the Smokies brought us

Traveling from the coast to the Smokies brought us through Atlanta. Here we found the home of one of the most famous products in the world, had our first ever encounter with Berry's twin brother, and woke up to a beautiful mist-covered lake. Not bad for a simple stop along the way!

We only just touched the westernmost tip of Florid

We only just touched the westernmost tip of Florida at the Gulf Island National Seashore. With white sandy beaches and beautiful dunescapes littered with civil war fortifications all open to exploration, it's a beautiful and relaxed place to explore.

What's amazing is that we're now on the exact opposite side of Cancún on the Gulf of Mexico. In only two weeks of driving we've already made it this far!

Following our happy reunion in Houston, we hit a couple of highlights as we traveled east through the southern US.

Starting with the Space Center 🚀, which had some super cool exhibits and demonstrations. Then came the Tabasco factory on Avery Island, where we got educated on the many different flavors of hot sauce & Cajun cuisine, combined with a tour of the impressive 'jungle gardens'. 🌱

Finally we visited New Orleans, which we'll remember mainly as dirty and smelly, and toured one of its surrounding swamps, where the tiny canals through the trees were impressive and beautiful, but we couldn't help but feeling like we were in an outdoor zoo instead of on a safari.🐊
